Pruning 101

Professional Pruning Services

Pruning is one of the most common tree maintenance services that professional arborists provide. At PDX Tree Service, we perform pruning in Lake Oswego, Sherwood, Tigard, and other cities in the area. Due to the abundance of trees in this region, regular pruning is often necessary for homeowners. With our pruning services, you can anticipate that the health of your trees will improve and any safety risks will be reduced.

We recommended that homeowners request pruning services if they have concerns about weak branches, or want dead or diseased branches removed. While pruning can be performed any time during the year, it is best done prior to spring before any new growth occurs.

When our team performs pruning for local homeowners, we always ensure the complete removal of dying or diseased branches, as well as raising of lower branches that interfere with walkways or vehicles. If you are ready to get started with professional pruning services you can trust, give our team at PDX Tree Service a call today!

FAQ About Tree Pruning Services

How do I know if my tree needs pruning?

Common signs include dead or hanging branches, branches rubbing against each other, limbs growing toward your roof or power lines, uneven or lopsided growth, and reduced sunlight getting through the canopy. If you’re unsure, an on-site assessment takes the guesswork out of it, we’ll tell you honestly what’s needed and what can wait.

Late winter to early spring, just before new growth begins, is generally the ideal window for most trees. The tree is still dormant, cuts heal faster, and you can see the branch structure clearly without leaves in the way.

It depends on the species. Most large fir and pine trees in the Portland area need to be pruned every 5 to 7 years, while cedars and other evergreens typically need attention every 3 to 5 years, more frequently if they’re growing close to structures

For most private property trees, no permit is required. However, a permit is required to prune native trees located in Environmental Overlay Zones on private property. Street trees those in the right-of-way between the curb and sidewalk always require a permit before any pruning work.
